How to choose a trolling motor

  • Thrust: about 2 lb of thrust per 100 lb of loaded boat weight, more for wind and current.
  • Voltage: up to about 55 lb usually runs on 12V. 70–80 lb usually needs 24V, and 100 lb+ needs 36V.
  • Mount: transom mounts are simple and cheap. Bow mounts give better control for fishing, and GPS models can hold your spot.
  • Shaft length: measure from the mount to the waterline and add about 20 inches.
