How to choose an electric outboard

  • Power: 3 HP-equivalent brushless outboards like the Newport NT300 suit tenders and small boats. High-thrust transom motors (62–86 lb) are a cheaper option for slower jon boats and inflatables.
  • Voltage: most electric outboards run on 36V or 48V, so plan for a matching lithium battery.
  • Shaft length: match the shaft to your transom height. Long-shaft versions are for taller transoms.
  • Water: pick a saltwater-rated motor for salt or brackish water.
